Edward River Mission

LOCATION: Situated on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula approximately halfway between Karumba and Weipa on the Edward River.

DESCRIPTION: This mission was established by the Anglican Church. The 32 children who were housed here attended the Mitchell River Mission School until 1950, when a school was constructed in the mission. Eleven children were removed to Palm Island under the Aboriginal Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act of 1897. In 1964 a cyclone destroyed most of the mission.
