Sunday Island Mission

LOCATION:

(1899) mission was established on Sunday Island, near the entrance to King Sound

(1934) mission moved to the mainland between Yampi Passage and Cone Bay

DESCRIPTION: This private mission was established by missionary Sydney Hadley. Between 1923 and 1929 it was managed by the Australian Aborigines’ Mission before it was transferred to the United Aborigines Mission in 1929. In 1934 it moved to Wotjulum before returning to Sunday Island in 1937. From 1905 onwards children here were under the guardianship of government welfare departments.
