Hammond Island Mission Orphanage

LOCATION: Hammond Island

DESCRIPTION: Run by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, this mission housed 15 ‘half caste’ boys. They had been sent from the Thursday Island Catholic Orphanage by Father Doyle from the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in 1929. It closed when the residents were evacuated to Cooyar, near Toowoomba.
