Queensland Healing Strategy

Dreaming big

The Healing Foundation has been working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders to co-design and develop the first ever Queensland Healing Strategy.

We have heard from more than 400 people through interviews, forums, online surveys and yarning circles, in Cairns, the Gold Coast, Inala, Rockhampton, St George and Yarrabah. We have heard from Stolen Generations survivors, Elders, young people, families, community organisations, and healers.

The Healing Strategy and Implementation plan are now being considered by the Queensland government and the Queensland First Children and Families Board to identify and work with key partners across government and the community to maximise opportunities for implementation.

The voices we heard have been brought together in the Dreaming Big report, which you can download below.

Bringing our trauma-aware and healing-informed knowledge, evidence-based research and innovation to community-led healing initiatives, we create a place of safety for Stolen Generations survivors and their families, where their voices can be heard.

“We don’t want to be told how to do this – we want to be supported to do this our way, the old way but with new things included. We  know how to evolve with the times, that what we do and that’s who we are, but we can’t evolve unless it’s our way.”
St George Elder

“The Healing Foundation provides the tools, evidence and frameworks for people to develop healing activities in their communities. We meet communities where they are at. When they tell us what they wish they knew – and we can provide them with research, a tool, a case study. All the research is there, and by our own researchers. That’s empowering in itself.”
Fiona Cornforth, CEO

As we develop the Queensland Healing Strategy, we are committed to providing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders with information about existing healing initiatives, programs, services, and approaches that are already working, along with a range of tools, resources and evidence of what works to empower communities to help lead their own healing.

The Healing Foundation is committed to truth telling, as an essential part of healing for Stolen Generations survivors, their families and communities. We recognise the impacts of trauma that are still being felt today, as a result of colonisation, and prioritise truth telling as an integral part of the healing journey.

Healing creates a better future for our children and a world where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and our cultures thrive. Healing is about making spirit feel good. It’s about moving forward with hope for the future, with renewed energy, strength and enthusiasm for life.

The Queensland Healing Strategy is leading the way with a navigational tool to chart a way forward, help heal past hurts and break the cycle of intergenerational trauma for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
