Bathurst Island Mission

Location – Bathurst Island Mission situated at Nguiu, Bathurst Island
(1940 – 1946)
Event – Bathurst Island Mission closed due to the war in 1940 and reopened in 1946

DESCRIPTION: Run by the Roman Catholic Church, this mission initially housed girls aged 5 to 18. A boys’ dormitory was also later opened. In the early 1970s the dormitories were closed and Bathurst Island community took over management of the mission. In December 1974 the mission became known as Nguiu.
