In September 2015 the Healing Foundation brought together members of ten Stolen Generations organisations from around Australia to participate in a workshop about collective healing for Stolen Generations members and their descendants.
Collective healing is a model where people are supported and empowered to develop their own skills and capacities to enable healing in their communities, families and in themselves. It involves bringing people with similar experiences together, often with their children and grandchildren, in a safe space where they can build understanding and skills, and take positive steps towards a better future.
Participants shared stories about healing camps and gatherings, trips on country and reconnection to cultural sites, reunions for those from institutions, and capacity building activities that empower Stolen Generations members to lead and develop their own healing solutions. Group yarning time provided rich insights into what factors contribute to supporting recovery and healing for Stolen Generations members.
