The Stolen Generations are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed as children from their families and communities through race-based policies set up by both State and Federal Governments from 1910 to the 1970s.

If people don’t have the opportunity to heal from past trauma, they may unknowingly pass it on to others. Their children may experience difficulties with attachment, disconnection from their extended families and culture and high levels of stress from family and community members who are dealing with the impacts of trauma.

We work in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander healing leadership, survivors, youth, therapists and academics to harness knowledge and co-design projects that combine ancient Indigenous healing knowledge with Western trauma knowledge.

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, healing is a holistic process, which addresses mental, physical, emotional and spiritual needs and involves connections to culture, family and land. Healing works best when solutions are culturally strong, developed and driven at the local level, and led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Activity

Read stories from Stolen Generations survivors and understand the ongoing effects of their removal on them, their family and community. Then choose one person’s story and use the knowledge to conduct your own research to create:

a persuasive poster about the ongoing effects of the Stolen Generations
a two minute presentation to accompany the poster.

Students must:

give their poster a title
use demographics and statistics from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report
use and reference other sources
use quotes from their selected Survivor Stories
plan a short presentation to accompany the poster (Use this worksheet to assist planning.)
write a good copy of the speech on index cards and create a final copy of the poster on A3 cardboard. (Remind students that it is not appropriate to recreate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art forms.)

CONCLUSION

Use the yarning circle inspired space you have created in your home to allow your child to share their poster and speech. Email a copy of the poster and recording of the speech to your child’s teacher.
Consider sharing your work with The Healing Foundation so other students and Stolen Generations survivors can see the work you’ve done.
