Background

Acknowledgement of Country

The Healing Foundation acknowledges Country, Custodians and Community of the lands on which we live and work. We also pay our respects to Elders and to Stolen Generations survivors, of the Dreaming and of the here and now. We recognise the ongoing nature of trauma experiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and commit each day to survivor-led intergenerational healing.

Warning: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices and names of people who have passed away.

Supporting Stolen Generations survivors, families and communities

The Healing Foundation is a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation that provides a platform to amplify the voices and lived experience of Stolen Generations survivors and their families.

We work with communities to create a place of safety, providing an environment for Stolen Generations survivors and their families to speak for themselves, tell their own stories, and be in charge of their own healing. We promote trauma-aware, healing-informed practice to help government, policymakers, and workforces understand their role in intergenerational healing.

By addressing unresolved trauma in First Nations communities – trauma that was caused by colonisation and actions like the forced removal of children – we are walking alongside communities on the path to healing.

Through genuine partnerships, cultural strength, and community-led initiatives, we can support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to restore connections, reclaim identity, and nurture resilience for future generations. Healing is not just about addressing the past, but about building a stronger, safer, and more hopeful future together.

Our work honours our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ancestors and our future generations.

Statement: Review provides pathway to recognise Stolen Generations as part of Closing the Gap
16 July 2025
Despite the wide-ranging impacts of the Stolen Generations, and the continued disadvantage faced by survivors, they have largely been overlooked over the past 17 years of Closing the Gap implementation. Shannan Dodson, The Healing Foundation’s CEO and a Yawuru woman, acknowledges the exceptional efforts of the Coalition of Peaks in leading reform, holding governments to account and driving change in partnership through calling for initiatives such as the Closing the Gap Independent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Led Review. The review recognises that although Stolen Generations survivors, descendants and related organisations are key to the Closing the Gap outcomes, they are not adequately represented in the National Agreement. “Currently, there are no specific targets or measures to acknowledge their unique experiences and challenges,” Ms Dodson said.
