Acknowledgement of Country

The Healing Foundation acknowledges Country, Custodians and Community of the lands on which we live and work. We also pay our respects to Elders and to Stolen Generations survivors, of the Dreaming and of the here and now. We recognise the ongoing nature of trauma experiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and commit each day to survivor-led intergenerational healing.

Warning: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices and names of people who have passed away.

Online event – Unpacking From Sorry to Action: A plan to act on Bringing them Home (2026-2028)

There will be a unique opportunity for government officials and community organisations across Australia to learn about how they can make meaningful change for Stolen Generations survivors on Tuesday, July 21.

The Healing Foundation invites all relevant government agencies, political offices and community organisations next week to a webinar about the organisation’s new action plan From Sorry to Action: A plan to act on Bringing them home (2026-2028) (Action Plan).

The action plan highlights the ongoing and urgent needs of Stolen Generations survivors across five priority areas, including:

  • health, wellbeing and ageing
  • records access and redress
  • sector sustainability
  • education, data and research
  • governance and accountability

It is a time-critical roadmap that outlines key priorities and tangible actions to support leaders and policy makers to act on a number of the long outstanding recommendations of Bringing them home: Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families (1997).

The Healing Foundation is calling on leaders to take urgent and coordinated action the year leading up to and immediately following the 30th Anniversary of Bringing them home in May 2027.

It’s been almost three decades since the report was tabled in Federal Parliament, but just five of its 83 recommendations have been clearly implemented – this woeful inaction was identified in analysis in our Are you waiting for us to die? The unfinished business of Bringing them home report from last year.

Register now for the online event – Unpacking From Sorry to Action: A plan to act on Bringing them home (2026-2028).

Next steps in implementing the action plan

This webinar is designed to evaluate the action plan – an opportunity for stakeholders to hear directly from our CEO Shannan Dodson and Director of Policy and Programs Nicole Kilby who will talk about how to interpret the plan’s vision for change, actions and the next steps in its implementation.

Ms Dodson encouraged decision makers to join the webinar and ‘walk alongside’ The Healing Foundation and Stolen Generations organisations in generating real action for Stolen Generation survivors.

“We urge all relevant government officials and representatives from organisations to join Nicole and I to discuss the next steps in making meaningful change for survivors,” she said.

She said accountability and transparency in reporting progress on the actions of the two-year plan will also be a key part of the discussion in the webinar.

“Inaction in the past has been a result of the lack of transparency and accountability,” she said.

“This is why we've thought a lot about how we will work together to ensure that there is accountability to survivors and their descendants.”

The Healing Foundation has requested a response from all agencies and organisations listed in the plan.

Progress and responses from agencies and organisations will be published on our website at different stages of the plan.

“This accountability is critical for us to measure progress and communicate with our communities about the action plan,” Ms Dodson said.
