Background

Acknowledgement of Country

The Healing Foundation acknowledges Country, Custodians and Community of the lands on which we live and work. We also pay our respects to Elders and to Stolen Generations survivors, of the Dreaming and of the here and now. We recognise the ongoing nature of trauma experiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and commit each day to survivor-led intergenerational healing.

Warning: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices and names of people who have passed away.

Education Toolkits & Lesson Plans

The Healing Foundation offers a free full education toolkit for use at school and at home.

Stolen Generations Resource Kit for Teachers and Students

The Resource Kit offers a strengths-based approach to educating all students about the experiences of the Stolen Generations and the impact of intergenerational trauma, using facts, real examples and stories.

In the range of resources provided, the Resource Kit offers guidance to teachers on how to approach these lessons for all age groups confidently and with cultural safety at the heart of each activity.

Stolen Generations survivors have provided essential cultural consultation and guidance to the development of the Resource Kit. The Healing Foundation has also worked closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous teachers, parents, early childhood specialists and curriculum writers.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history is Australian history, and learning about The Stolen Generations is a critical chapter in the story of this nation.

Curriculum aligned resource kit for all year levels

When the Stolen Generations Resource Kit for Teachers and Students was relaunched in 2023, it was written to meet many areas of version 9 of the Australian Curriculum.

Bringing the Resource Kit into your curriculum can help your school meet the cross-curriculum priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures as well as many subject specific curricula, including English, Maths, Health and Physical Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Visual Art, Media, Music, Dance, Drama, Civics and Citizenship, Geography, and History.

Each year level has at least four activities that are designed to be a starting point for both beginning and experienced teachers to embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into their classrooms.

The activities are designed to be delivered as a unit, or to be fit into any curriculum as discrete lessons. In these lessons, students are encouraged to listen, to reflect and respond and then to share their knowledge with their school, their families and communities.

As well as the lesson plans, on our website you can find Plug-n-Play PowerPoints, classroom certificates, posters to share around your school and an Educator Guide to support educators and school communities to bring Stolen Generation survivors' stories into the classroom.

  • Watch the welcome video by Stolen Generations survivor Florence Onus
  • Familiarise yourself with The Healing Foundation website, in particular the following resources:
  • Map of Stolen Generations institutions
  • It is important to consider holding an Acknowledgment of Country. Participating in this ancient protocol can be done by non-Indigenous and Indigenous people. If you’re not sure which Country you live on, check the Map of Indigenous Australia.
  • Read through recommended materials and resource requirements prior to undertaking the lessons.
  • Take time to explore the Educator’s Guide for tips and tools to support the kit.
