Background

Acknowledgement of Country

The Healing Foundation acknowledges Country, Custodians and Community of the lands on which we live and work. We also pay our respects to Elders and to Stolen Generations survivors, of the Dreaming and of the here and now. We recognise the ongoing nature of trauma experiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and commit each day to survivor-led intergenerational healing.

Warning: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices and names of people who have passed away.

Are you waiting for us to die? The unfinished business of Bringing them home

'Are you waiting for us to die?' The unfinished business of Bringing them home

The 2025 Healing Foundation report, 'Are you waiting for us to die?': The unfinished business of Bringing them home, has found only 6% of the 1997 Bringing them home report recommendations – made to support Stolen Generations survivors and their families 28 years ago – have been clearly implemented.

It recommends a National Healing Package of priority changes to enable remaining elderly survivors to live out their days with dignity.

The title of the report reflects the collective testimony of Stolen Generation survivors, who are seeing their brothers and sisters passing away, and the urgency of the changes that are sought.

The report offers practical policy solutions to some of the big challenges facing survivors and their families, including:

  • access to culturally safe, trauma informed aged care and health services
  • urgent equitable redress
  • prioritised access to records, and
  • investment in Stolen Generation organisations.

The report combines commissioned analysis of the Bringing them home report recommendations as well as insights from many years of consultation with Stolen Generations survivors and organisations on their needs and priorities.

Thank you

The Healing Foundation dedicates this report to the many Stolen Generations survivors and organisations whose wisdom and insights shaped this report.

We also extend our thanks to the Stolen Generations Reference Group, Youth Reference Group, and the Board who guide us in all that we do.

University of Canberra discussion paper

Our report and recommendations have been informed by the Discussion paper on the unfinished business of the Bringing Them Home report, researched and written by Professor Alison Gerard and Maureen Bates-McKay from the University of Canberra.

The Healing Foundation commissioned their work to assess and analyse the status of the Bringing them home report recommendations, to inform next steps on policy action, advocacy and communication.

We are grateful to the many Stolen Generations survivors and organisations whose insights and advice played a critical role in shaping our new report.
