Acknowledgement of Country

The Healing Foundation acknowledges Country, Custodians and Community of the lands on which we live and work. We also pay our respects to Elders and to Stolen Generations survivors, of the Dreaming and of the here and now. We recognise the ongoing nature of trauma experiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and commit each day to survivor-led intergenerational healing.

Warning: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices and names of people who have passed away.

What we do

About the Healing Foundation

The Healing Foundation supports Stolen Generations survivors — the many thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander taken, as babies and children, from loving families, communities, culture and Country under previous government policies.

We work closely with Stolen Generations organisations, governments, service providers and other stakeholders to address the priority needs of Stolen Generations survivors.

These priorities, closely linked to the 1997 Bringing them home report recommendations, require an urgent and coordinated response from governments, not-for-profit organisations, and the broader Australian public.

 They include:

  • Trauma-informed health and aged care services
  • Access to records that hold peoples' stories and identity
  • Equitable redress for survivors across all states and territories
  • Sustainable funding for the organisations that deliver on the ground support for survivors with records, family tracing and reunions and healing programs and services.

Bringing Them Home

Bringing them home

The 1997 Bringing Them Home report delivered the findings and recommendations of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families.

It is an extraordinary document, resulting from the first government inquiry documenting the experiences of Stolen Generations survivors and the impacts of forced removal.

The inquiry was conducted by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC), now known as the Australian Human Rights Commission, and led by the late Sir Ronald Wilson, then HREOC President, and the then Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Professor Mick Dodson AM.

Aged Care DSC01966

Health and aged care

Access to culturally-safe, trauma informed aged care is critical for Stolen Generations survivors.

Education

Education

Stolen Generations survivors want all Australians to learn about what they experienced — the impact of being taken from family, community, culture and Country, and the ongoing burden of trauma they had no say in creating. That truth-telling is an essential part of healing.

Records

Records

Timely and culturally appropriate access to records is essential to healing for many Stolen Generations survivors, but access is inconsistent and inequitable, particularly across state and territory borders.

Redress For Survivors

Redress For Stolen Generations Survivors

Redress, sometimes called reparations, is a crucial part of healing for Stolen Generations survivors and their descendants.  Redress is commonly offered across the world in response to human rights abuses. It provides some acknowledgement of what survivors experienced, supported by financial compensation, an apology, and practical support for their healing.

Sector Support

Sector Support

To support collective healing and strengthen community connections for Stolen Generations survivors, descendants and communities, The Healing Foundation provides a range of funding and support.

Community Healing Initiatives

Community Healing Initiatives

The Collective Healing Grants support Stolen Generations survivors and their descendants through initiatives that promote healing, strengthen community connections, and enhance the wellbeing for Stolen Generation survivors and their communities.

Our grants program emphasises the importance of intergenerational connections, cultural preservation, and capacity building within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
