Acknowledgement of Country

The Healing Foundation acknowledges Country, Custodians and Community of the lands on which we live and work. We also pay our respects to Elders and to Stolen Generations survivors, of the Dreaming and of the here and now. We recognise the ongoing nature of trauma experiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and commit each day to survivor-led intergenerational healing.

Warning: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices and names of people who have passed away.

Who are the Stolen Generations?

In every state and territory, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were systematically removed as part of deliberate assimilation policies aimed at eliminating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Systematic policies of harm

The forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities was common government policy across Australia from the mid-1800s until the 1970s.

Stolen children were separated from their families, communities, Country, culture and language. They were placed in institutions, missions, training farms and schools, adopted by non-Indigenous families or fostered. They were often subject to harsh treatment in institutions. Many were abused, neglected, or both.

In every state and territory, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were systematically removed as part of deliberate assimilation policies aimed at eliminating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This practice is consistent with the act of genocide as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Widespread denial of this history was the norm until the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families and subsequent Bringing them home report handed down in 1997.

Lasting impacts on survivors and communities

The trauma and grief suffered by Stolen Generations survivors has caused deep and often lifelong impacts across the generations.

Because of their forced removal, many Stolen Generations survivors face poorer health, economic and social outcomes compared to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples — ‘a gap within the gap’.

Many are still seeking access to records to find out who their families are and to understand their identities. Only some have had access to redress, with inconsistencies in amounts and eligibility between different states and territories.

Today, many survivors are elderly and have complex needs. Too often survivors don’t access the services they need, particularly health and aged care, out of fear they will bring back traumatic memories or cause more harm.

Survivors still waiting for justice

With great courage and deep pain, Stolen Generations survivors have shared their experiences, again and again – to the Bringing them home inquiry, at annual commemorative events and to services in their bid to find and connect with families and culture. They often have to relive their  trauma when seeking support, such as from health and aged care providers.

But despite telling their stories and sharing their experiences, they still await justice.

Stolen Generations survivors ask every Australian to think: what if that had happened to me or my children?

We encourage all Australians to increase their knowledge and understanding about the history of the Stolen Generations, which is finally being taught in schools.

Our downloadable education resource kit for teachers and students makes it easy for school communities to start the conversation and inform classroom discussions using facts, real examples and stories.

We urge governments to urgently support survivors by coordinating a national healing package.
