Record Grants Rounds Award $2.3 Million to Support Stolen Generations Healing and Commemorative Initiatives

Nearly 29 years after the Bringing Them Home report was tabled, community-led healing initiatives remain vital to the healing of Stolen Generations survivors and communities across Australia.

The Healing Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2025 -26 Collective Healing Grants Round and Stolen Generations Grants Round, awarding a record total of over $2.3 million to support Stolen Generations survivors, descendants, and communities nationwide.

Funding recipients include Stolen Generations Organisations within the sector, which deliver core services as the main service providers to support survivors.

The Healing Foundation also awarded grants to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisations to deliver survivor-led initiatives, which allows a broader offering of healing initiatives to reach more survivors than ever before.

The Healing Foundation’s Board Chair, Professor Steve Larkin, a Kungarakan man, said Stolen Generations Organisations were encouraged to use these grants flexibly for survivor-led and survivor-focused projects, activities, and initiatives as determined by their communities' unique priorities and goals.

“These grants acknowledge the dedicated efforts of organisations led by Stolen Generations survivors, who work tirelessly to provide essential services and support to their communities.”

Increased funds and broader eligibility support more service delivery than ever before

This funding will help ensure that these organisations can continue to meet the increasingly complex needs of survivors and their descendants.

“As well as commemorative activities and programs, the Collective Healing Grants this year were also about supporting capacity building for the sector. By strengthening the Stolen Generations Organisations sector, we help to continue to support survivors and descendants into the future.”

“Additionally, we expanded the eligibility to support other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisations that are also delivering survivor-led initiatives,” shared Professor Larkin.

Grants activities include National Sorry Day events across the country, oral history activities, men's and women's gatherings and storytelling projects for Stolen Generations survivors.

Importance of commemorative events such as National Sorry Day on 26 May

As National Sorry Day approaches on 26 May, The Healing Foundation urges political parties, governments, churches, and various non-government organisations across Australia to work collaboratively with Stolen Generations groups, survivors, and The Healing Foundation.

“As we approach the 29th anniversary of the Bringing Them Home report, it is important for all Australians to also recognise the ongoing importance of commemorating cultural and historical dates of significance. These occasions provide an opportunity to reflect on the experiences of the survivors of the Stolen Generations, their families, and their communities, as well as for all Australians,” The Healing Foundation CEO, Shannan Dodson said.

“Commemorative activities and community-led healing initiatives stand as a powerful reminder of the harm done to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and the urgent need to address the unfinished business of the Bringing Them Home report. It is essential that we continue to raise awareness and drive action towards healing and justice,” Ms Dodson said.
