A new Healing Foundation report has found only 6% of the Bringing them home report recommendations – made to support Stolen Generations survivors and their families almost 28 years ago – have been clearly implemented.
It recommends a National Healing Package of priority changes to enable remaining elderly survivors to live out their days with dignity.
The title of the new report reflects the collective testimony of Stolen Generation survivors, who are seeing their brothers and sisters passing away, and the urgency of the changes that are sought.
The report offers practical policy solutions to some of the big challenges facing survivors and their families, including:
- access to culturally safe, trauma informed aged care and health services
- urgent equitable redress
- prioritised access to records, and
- investment in Stolen Generation Organisations.
“Survivors are dying. We cannot wait another generation,” The Healing Foundation’s CEO Shannan Dodson said.
“We call on all political parties, federal, state and territory Governments, police, churches, other agencies and organisations to meet their responsibilities to support the Stolen Generations, who were subject to forcible removal from their families and communities over many decades of harsh and cruel policies.”
The report combines commissioned analysis of the Bringing them home report recommendations as well as insights from many years of consultation with Stolen Generations survivors and organisations on their needs and priorities.

University of Canberra discussion paper
Our report and recommendations have been informed by the Discussion paper on the unfinished business of the Bringing Them Home report, researched and written by Professor Alison Gerard and Maureen Bates-McKay from the University of Canberra.
The Healing Foundation commissioned their work to assess and analyse the status of the Bringing them home report recommendations, to inform next steps on policy action, advocacy and communication.
We are grateful to the many Stolen Generations survivors and organisations whose insights and advice played a critical role in shaping our new report.
