Background

Acknowledgement of Country

The Healing Foundation acknowledges Country, Custodians and Community of the lands on which we live and work. We also pay our respects to Elders and to Stolen Generations survivors, of the Dreaming and of the here and now. We recognise the ongoing nature of trauma experiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and commit each day to survivor-led intergenerational healing.

Warning: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices and names of people who have passed away.

About the Healing Foundation

Our mission is to seek justice for Stolen Generations survivors and their descendants on outstanding issues that impact their health and wellbeing. FInd out more about who we are and the the work we do.

The Healing Foundation supports Stolen Generations survivors — the many thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people taken, as babies and children, from loving families, communities, culture and Country under previous government policies.

We work closely with Stolen Generations survivors, descendants and organisations, and also governments, service providers and other stakeholders to address the priority needs of Stolen Generations.

These priorities, closely linked to the Bringing them home report recommendations, require an urgent and coordinated response from governments, agencies and not-for-profit organisations. They include:

  • Trauma-informed health and aged care services
  • Access to records that hold peoples' stories and identity
  • Equitable redress for survivors across all states and territories
  • Sustainable funding for the organisations that deliver on the ground support for survivors with records, family tracing and reunions and healing programs and services.

We are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led, and our work is guided by the wisdom and expertise of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Board, Stolen Generations Reference Group and Youth Reference Group

Achieving justice for the Stolen Generations

Our mission is to seek justice for Stolen Generations survivors and their descendants on outstanding issues that impact their health and wellbeing. The Healing Foundation works to:

  • build the evidence base about the ongoing, intergenerational impact of the Stolen Generations policies and what works best to support survivors in their healing
  • provide expert advice to key workforces and professionals on priority needs and best practice, trauma informed aged care and health and wellbeing services
  • collaborate with survivors and local organisations around the country to support survivor-led healing projects
  • build staff and organisational capacity within Stolen Generations organisations
  • support major annual events to commemorate survivors and support ongoing healing and learning
  • educate all Australians about the true history of our country and the continuing impacts of Stolen Generations history.
National healing package needed

Now, we are calling for a coordinated national healing package of urgent changes so remaining survivors can live out their days with dignity. The package outlines practical steps to make aged care a safe place for survivors, provide fair redress across the country, give better access to records, and invest in health and healing services on the ground.
